Be Specific
Advice can help employees overcome a challenge or gain a new perspective on an issue. But the impact of your advice can be greatly diminished if it’s not delivered carefully and respectfully.
Focus on outcomes and impartial observations rather than on personal attributes. Otherwise, your constructive feedback could be misinterpreted as a jab at their character. You also need to make sure your employee knows why the problem matters.
Be Empathetic
Empathy allows managers to understand the challenges their team members face. This can help them provide advice that is more honest and helpful.
For example, empathetic leaders are able to see that their employees may be suffering from work burnout. They can then recommend strategies to help them recover.
Be Direct
It’s important to be direct when delivering feedback. Whether it’s verbal or in an e-mail, indirect language can be misinterpreted. For example, saying something like “Jane, other people have noticed you chat too much in the cubicles” could send Jane’s mind racing with questions about who those people are.
Be Supportive
Employees who feel supported by their managers are more likely to perform well. This may mean supporting them during difficult times, such as when a family member is sick or if they have personal issues that impact work performance.
